in character information.

series: Supernatural
name: Dean Winchester
age: 29
sex: M
race: Human
weight: About 170lbs
height: 6’00’’
canon point: Episode 4x03 after he’s supposed to be sent back by Castiel.

history: http://supernatural.wikia.com/wiki/Dean_Winchester

personality: Dean has a habit of coming off as a smartass and a slacker; he can appear sarcastic and shallow, more interested in getting under women's skirts and messing around instead of focusing on the job at hand. While he’s happy to give off that impression, Dean’s also ruthlessly efficient at what he does even if he happens to come away with a chick’s number or a free six-pack while he’s at it (he’s a real big multi-tasker like that).

The most important thing to Dean is his family. Period. He’d give up anything for his family and in fact has in canon (for example he’s perfectly willing to sell his soul for Sam and doesn’t think twice about it). Losing his dad at the start of Season 2 only cemented in the fact Sam was the only family Dean had left now, and while he might tease Sam and jerk him around just for kicks, he cares for his brother to the point where he will sacrifice the hunt and himself for his little brother.

As a hunter, Dean has the same "shoot first" policy his dad had, and that tends to become most obvious when he interrogates people. He comes off as charismatic, but isn't one to pad his questions with genuine sympathy when he drills someone for information (something Sam is more likely to do, as it's shown in the series Sam is able to openly empathize with others more than Dean). Dean also has a mischievous streak, and is known to pick dorky false names, play pranks on others - most notably his own brother - and insult them out of the blue (again, his favorite target seems to be Sam). Dean's grown up to be resilient despite everything he's seen and hunted, but he still has his own fair share of doubts and insecurities. While he won't willingly talk about them, he's occasionally opened up from time to time, but it's always an uphill struggle for him to get to that point where he’d admit anything aloud, and he usually lapses into the Dean Winchester game face: avoiding whatever’s bugging him with jokes and focusing on the job.

Like his dad, Dean’s weakness is his family. The show has referenced him as being just as capable hunting solo as with someone backing him up, but when his family is in real danger, Dean is usually the first to step back and insist they be more careful - or even give up the hunt altogether if it's the only way for his family to survive. Despite how he tries to present himself, Dean’s actually the most passive one in the family (when Sam and John used to fight, he'd be the one to try to break it up and he was in the past usually the first one to cave in to either). If Sam wants to check something out, Dean comes along, even if he grumbles the whole way. If John gave an order, Dean jumped to follow it.

Dean also has a major insecurity complex: he views his life as worthless and not worth saving. He can't imagine living without his family, as evidenced by his reaction to Sam's supposed infection in S2, where he was willing to sit with his infected "brother" even if it was a death sentence for him. In a way, he views himself as expendable. Angry over his Dad's deal, he states what is dead should stay dead, making it clear he doesn't think he deserved to come back, especially not with that kind of sacrifice. These feelings of worthlessness grew the closer he got to Sam after their Dad's death and while he criticized Evan Hudson over his deal with the Crossroads Demon, Dean did the same thing when faced with Sam's murder, selling his soul, viewing it as worth less than Sam's life. Because he'd centered so much of his world on his little brother, he is lost without him and is unable and unwilling to face the future without Sam alive, even if it means he'll burn in Hell a year later. A part of him views this as balance being restored, as he was supposed to die not once, but twice, and it eats at him that two people died to save him of all people. Selling his soul for Sam to live again seems to somehow ease that intense guilt he has over what he thinks were needless sacrifices.

Dean often pulls his brother's chain, he takes his responsibility to watch out for him very seriously, to the point where he can't take his "failure" to protect Sam, thinking he royally screwed up his entire job in life. Dean obsesses over it until he caves and heads out to make the deal. He centers himself so much around this idea of watching out for Sam, that it surprises him when Sam says it's a two way street. His biggest fear was losing Sam and still is: he's scared of living without him and scared as well of having him turn somehow, despite his attempts to prevent his turning, and he knows he can't kill his brother, no matter what his Dad told him to do.

Because he’s been literally through Hell and back, Dean tries to cope by acting like he’s his same old self and going overboard: more sleeping around, more drinking, and he’s grown more distrustful about Sam and his abilities between Season 4 and Season 2. He’s taken his protectiveness of Sam to basically a whole new level, hovering over his brother and practically breathing down his back to make sure he doesn’t use his abilities, out of fear he could turn into the other psychic kids. This distrust has only grown over the years and as of Season 4, he tends to assume the worst of Sam and to also assume that since he’s older and “normal”, that Dean Knows Best. This self-righteous, rigid attitude of Dean’s serves to drive Sam away from him and is a cause for the friction between them. In that case, he’s taken after their dad.

abilities/powers: Dean's a pretty damn good shot, and is used to an array of different weapons from pistols to sniper rifles to crossbows and machetes. He's used to brawling and able to take punches as well and still try to give it his all even if he's at the end of his rope. Because Dean's a hunter, he's also got a background in all things paranormal and on fighting and taking down all sorts of supernatural nasties. He also has a tattoo to prevent him from being possessed by a demon. Other than that, he’s a normal human without powers, and has the same weaknesses.
